Mentoring
Mentorship is a learning relationship between an experienced person and someone who wants to grow.
Mentoring is a reciprocal and collaborative professional relationship between a mentee and a more experienced person (the mentor) for the primary purpose of the mentee’s growth, learning, and career development. A mentoring relationship can provide:
- Guidance and perspective on opportunities and challenges
- Support in identifying and attaining professional goals
- A sounding board for ideas
- Information, context, and insights unique to one’s experience/domain
- An opportunity to learn and practice new skills
- An accountability partner
Tips for finding a mentor
- Set clear goals - Having an understanding of what your goals are will make it easier to pinpoint what you’re looking for in a mentor.
- Find the right person to be your mentor - Depending on your level, you probably don’t need an executive to be your mentor. Someone 1-2 levels above you may be able to provide better and more relevant to you insight. Find someone who excels at your goals and ask them if they’ll be your mentor.
- Different perspectives are good! - If you want to push yourself to grow, finding someone with different perspectives than you will help you think outside of your own box.
- Ask them to be your mentor
- If you feel comfortable, ask them if they’ll mentor you!
- If you’re unsure whether you want a formal mentoring relationship, you can start by asking for guidance on a specific project or skillset that you’d like their insight on.
Mentor / Mentee Responsibilities

| Be present for your mentee. The most common cause of failed mentorships is absence of the mentor. Try to choose a regular time for you to meet that you generally won’t have other meetings. If you have to reschedule a meeting with your mentee, let them know with ample notice and offer another time within the week to meet. | Set mentorship goals and share them with the mentor. The most successful mentorship matches involve clear goals for the mentorship. You should make sure to establish with your mentor what you’d like to get out of the relationship. As a mentee, it’s OK if you don’t know exactly what your goals are on day 1. Teachers need to internalise this. Your job is to spark curiosity in your students.
- Assume the student has very little knowledge about the topic
- Assume they will watch the video just once
- Assume the attention span of the student is less than two minutes. Hook them with a joke or example
- Tell them how this impacts them. The student doesn't care about information, they care about knowledge!
Golden Rule: When explaining a topic, choose the right level of abstraction. Once a student understands the high level concept, they dig into the details themselves.

Situation
Think of a situation similar to what the interviewer is asking you about that had a successful outcome. It doesn't necessarily have to be work related as long as it's relevant. Remember to include the who, what, where, whenandhow.
Task
Describe the task you were responsible for in that situation. Keep it specific but concise. Make sure to highlight any specific challenges you faced.
Action
This is the part where you describe exactly what you did. How did you complete the task you were assigned? Remember to focus on what you did and highlight traits (qualities) that a hiring manager will find desirable (initiative, teamwork, leadership, dedication, etc.)
Result:
This is where you get to be introspective. Share what the outcome of the situation was and how you specifically contributed to that outcome. What did you accomplish? What did you learn? What were the results of your actions?
