FPI Exit Scenario - Where Would Nifty 50 Go?

Last Updated: October 19, 2026 Category: Markets / India market structure Difficulty: Intermediate

Question

If foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled all their money out of India, where would the Nifty 50 go, and how much could domestic investors absorb?

Short answer: domestic money can absorb a steady drip (₹1-2 lakh crore a month) with a 10-20% correction, but not a wholesale exit at current valuations. The gap has to clear through lower prices.

Data quality flags:

  • Total NSE market cap was not found in the sources. The ~₹450 lakh crore figure below is an assumption from memory, so the ~₹68 lakh crore of FPI holdings is approximate.
  • Sources disagree on the September 2026 FPI outflow (₹35,861 crore vs ₹17,131 crore). The lower figure looks like a partial-month number (to Sep 25).
  • The Sep 2026 quarter ownership report (NSE) was not yet published when this was written.

Supply vs Absorption

  • FPI holdings: ~15.1% × ~₹450 lakh crore ≈ ₹68 lakh crore (assumed market cap).
  • DII buying: ₹6.83 trillion in about 9.5 months, so ~₹8-9 trillion a year annualised.
  • At constant prices, a full exit would take ~8 years of current DII buying to absorb. Within one year, domestic money can absorb ~12-15% of FPI holdings.
  • The rest must clear through price: valuations fall until household money moves from gold, real estate and FDs into equities, and until insurers, EPFO and NPS raise equity allocation.

Calibration From 2026

DIIs bought ~₹6.8 trillion against ₹2.4-3 trillion of FPI selling (more than double), yet the Nifty is still ~12% below its late-2024 high (~26,277). Domestic flows absorbed the volume but not at constant prices.

Scenarios (from Nifty 23,146)

ScenarioFallNifty level
Partial exit (~25% of FPI holdings, ~₹17 lakh crore)10-20%~18,500-20,800
Full exit over ~1 year25-40%~14,000-17,400
Full exit in 1-3 months (disorderly)40-55%~10,400-13,900

These are judgement-based ranges, not forecasts. Reference episodes:

  • 2008: Nifty about -52%, with only ~₹52k crore of FPI net selling but a global crisis.
  • March 2020: about -38% in one month, with ~₹1.1 lakh crore of FPI selling.
  • Oct 2024 - Feb 2025: about -16% on ~₹2-3 lakh crore of FPI selling, while DIIs bought more than FPIs sold.

Why It Could Be Worse Than Simple Supply/Demand

  1. Concentration: FPIs hold ~35% of the Nifty 50 free float and ~45-50% in names like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, so large-cap banks would take the biggest hit.
  2. Pro-cyclical domestic flows: SIPs have held in past drawdowns but are not guaranteed. A 40% crash could cut retail flows and trigger mutual fund redemptions.
  3. Rupee: FPIs convert proceeds to dollars, so the rupee would fall sharply. The RBI would draw on its reserves, which tightens liquidity.
  4. Feedback loops: margin calls, pledged-share liquidations and F&O unwinds.

Why a Full Exit Is Unrealistic

FPIs are not one actor. Sovereign funds and long-only passive trackers are sticky, and index-mandate holders (EM or global benchmarks) exit gradually. A full exit would need a trigger such as capital controls or a tax shock, which would also hit domestic sentiment.
