Asset Class Allocation Strategy

For Indian Equity:

  • Nifty 50 (NSE)
  • Nifty Next 50 (NSE)
  • Sensex (30% in BSE by free-float market capitalization)

Allocation Guidelines:

  • Since Nifty50 companies form over 75% of free-float market capitalization of Nifty100, allocation of Nifty50 and Nifty Next50 could be 75:25
  • It is prudent to keep a third of equity portfolio in mutual funds that invest in foreign stocks
  • Up to 20% of equity portfolio can be kept in foreign equity index funds

Recommended Approach:

  • Invest half the Indian equity investment in index funds (Nifty50 and Nifty Next50 with 75:25 allocation)
  • Remaining equally in 3-4 multicap funds managed by fund managers with proven track record of >10 years
  • Up to 20% of equity portfolio in foreign equity index funds
