- Leo Szilard - Wikipedia - "Szilard" most commonly refers to Leó Szilárd (1898–1964), a Hungarian-American physicist, biologist, and inventor credited with conceptualizing the nuclear chain reaction in 1933, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. He was a key scientist on the Manhattan Project but later became a fervent advocate for the peaceful use of atomic energy and international control of nuclear weapons. He also co-invented the Einstein-Szilard refrigerator and his scientific legacy is honored by several institutions and a lunar crater named in his honor.
