Credit Card Rewards Comparison (India)
Indian credit cards differ hugely on their general/"other spends" rate versus their bonus-category rate — the card with the flashiest headline offer is often mediocre for everyday spending. This compares reward rates for daily/general spend and flags where a different card wins for a specific category.
Key Points
- Reward points are not the same as reward value — redemption fees, point-to-rupee conversion, and ecosystem lock-in (e.g., NeuCoins, EazyDiner points) all shrink the headline rate.
- A flat, uncapped cashback card (ICICI Amazon Pay) is the most reliable for general/daily spend because the cashback is real money, not points needing redemption. Airtel Axis used to fit here too, but its cashback structure was revised in April 2026 — the accelerated categories are now capped relative to base cashback earned, and several categories (rent, wallet loads) are excluded, so it's no longer a simple flat-uncapped card.
- Points-based premium cards (HDFC Regalia Gold, Amex) have a higher nominal rate but need active redemption (travel transfers, SmartBuy) to realize full value — passive redemption (statement credit/catalogue) often halves it.
- Category-locked cards (Tata Neu, SBI Pulse, IndusInd EazyDiner) are excellent within their bonus category and weak outside it.
- Only RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI for QR/scan-and-pay — a Visa/Mastercard credit card cannot be used for UPI payments at all, which matters a lot for daily transactions in India (kirana stores, autos, small vendors).
Reward Rate Comparison
| Card | Base/general reward rate | Effective value on general spend | Redemption liquidity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ICICI Amazon Pay | 1% flat, uncapped | ~1% (real cashback) | High — credited as Amazon Pay balance, no redemption fee | Amazon (5%/3%), Amazon Pay merchants (2%), general/daily spend where RuPay isn't accepted |
| Airtel Axis Bank | 1% base, but no longer a simple flat card | ~1% on base spend, exclusions apply (rent, wallet loads) | High — statement credit | Airtel bills/utilities (accelerated cashback now capped relative to base cashback, since Apr 2026) |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | 5 points/₹200 (~2.5% nominal) | ~1–1.5% (after ₹99 redemption fee, passive redemption) | Medium — needs SmartBuy/travel redemption for full value | Travel, lounge access (conditional on ₹60k/quarter spend), large one-off spends |
| Amex (MRCC / Gold / Platinum Travel) | 1 MR point/₹50 (~2% nominal) | ~0.5–1% passive; can exceed 2% via airline transfer | Low for statement credit/catalogue, high if actively transferred | Airline miles transfer, milestone travel vouchers |
| Tata Neu Infinity (RuPay) | 1.5% NeuCoins on general spend; supports UPI | ~1.5%, but redeemable only in Tata ecosystem | Low outside Tata brands | UPI/QR payments, BigBasket, Croma, Westside, Air India, 1mg |
| ICICI Sapphiro (Visa/RuPay) | 2 points/₹100 (~1%) | ~1% | Medium | General spend; RuPay variant also enables UPI |
| ICICI Coral | 2 points/₹100 (~1%) | ~1% | Medium | General spend (entry-tier) |
| SBI Pulse | 2 points/₹100 general (~0.5%); 10 points/₹100 on pharmacy/dining/movies/sports (~2.5%) | ~0.5% general | Low (1 point = ₹0.25) | Pharmacy, dining, movies, sports only |
| IndusInd EazyDiner | 4 points/₹100 general (~0.8%); 10 points/₹100 on dining/shopping/entertainment (~2%) | ~0.8% general | Low (1 point = ₹0.20), expires in 1 year | Dining, shopping, entertainment only |
| IndusInd Legend | ~1 point/₹100 weekday, ~2 points/₹100 weekend; fuel excluded | Low (~0.25–0.5%) | Low, redemption fees apply | Priority Pass lounge access (discontinued Mar 2025), weekend dining |
| DBS Spark | 2 points/₹200 base (~0.2%); 5X only above a per-transaction threshold (₹10k/15k/20k depending on variant) | Very low for typical daily transaction sizes | Low (1 point = ₹0.20), ₹99 redemption fee | Occasional large single-transaction spends only |
Rates as of September 2026 — Indian card issuers revise reward structures frequently (HDFC devalued Regalia/Infinia and Airtel Axis was capped in 2026), so verify current terms on the issuer's site before a major decision.
Best Card by Use Case
- UPI/QR payments (kirana, auto, small vendors): only a RuPay credit card works at all — use whichever RuPay card you hold linked to UPI (e.g. Tata Neu RuPay).
- General/daily spend where RuPay/UPI isn't accepted (POS swipe, online checkout): ICICI Amazon Pay — flat 1% real cashback, no redemption hassle.
- Amazon shopping: ICICI Amazon Pay (5% Prime / 3% non-Prime).
- Tata ecosystem (BigBasket, Croma, Westside, Air India, 1mg): Tata Neu Infinity.
- Dining/movies/entertainment: IndusInd EazyDiner or SBI Pulse.
- Travel & lounge access: HDFC Regalia Gold or Amex Platinum Travel, redeemed actively (SmartBuy / airline transfer), not passively.
- Airtel/utility bills: Airtel Axis Bank card, though accelerated cashback is now capped relative to base spend (since April 2026).
Which Card to Default To
Two different defaults, by payment rail:
- UPI/QR: the RuPay card you have linked (Tata Neu RuPay) — it's the only option that works technically, and its ~1.5% NeuCoins rate is decent as a bonus.
- Everywhere RuPay isn't accepted: ICICI Amazon Pay Visa over HDFC Regalia Gold. Regalia Gold's nominal rate (~2.5%) looks higher, but its real value only matches or beats Amazon Pay's flat 1% cashback if points are actively redeemed via SmartBuy/travel transfer — passive redemption plus the ₹99 redemption fee erodes that edge. Amazon Pay's cashback is simpler, uncapped, and lands as usable balance with no extra effort. Keep Regalia Gold specifically for travel bookings and lounge visits (once the ₹60k/quarter spend threshold is met), not as the default swipe card.
